Well, you’ve heard the saying “All good things must come to an end”? Well, it’s still true. Basically, the state ran out of money. To quote www.state.nj.us:
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT EFFECTIVE MAY 3, 2011, NEW UST FUND APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED OR PROCESSED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT FUNDS. New UST Fund applications will be date stamped at the time of receipt and held until such time as sufficient funding becomes available. At that time applications will be reviewed and processed based on the order of receipt.
So why do we still have information about the state program on our website? Because of those last few words “as sufficient funding becomes available“. Here is another quote to expand on that
Currently, as per the State Constitution, the UST Fund is allotted a certain amount of funding each fiscal year (July of each year). These amounts fluctuate with certain tax revenues collected by the state. NJDEP and NJEDA are currently working on legislative initiatives to help more efficiently utilize the limited funds anticipated in the future, however, there is no guarantee that any such initiatives will allow applications to be funded any earlier than detailed above.
So we are anticipating that there will be state funding coming again. And there should be. Oil leaks wreak havoc on the environment. If we want to have safe water for our children to drink, then we owe it to the citizens to keep the soil clean, no matter what the cost.
